JuNoWriMo // What Happened?! {An Update}

JuNoWriMo2017

Well, JuNo is good and over and…wow. It was a lot of fun!! I may not have reached 50,000 words, but I did reach over half!

Crown of Thorns // 16,057 words

Pickpocket // 1,100 words

Wanted for Time // 2,426 words

Breakthrough // 4,870 words

Blogging (including this post, since it was prewritten)Β //Β Β 5,968 words

GRAND TOTAL // 36,227 words!

And, since I didn’t really share any of my writings with you last month, here are some choice picks for you! They aren’t actual prose (except for Breakthrough), but rather bullet point outlines (since that’s the format that works best for me).

  • Merrick looked at Jerrick. β€œBrother, you look unwell.”
  • I know that, Merri. I was trying to be quiet about it.
  • β€œSee,” the queen said. β€œMerrick noticed too.”
  • β€œI’m fine,” Jerrick insisted. But of course, no one listened.
  • β€œNo you’re not,” the queen said. β€œJerrick Eddi Afernell, come over this moment.”
  • Jerrick grudgingly went to see his mother.
  • She was shocked and appalled at how horrible he looked. She examined him with a vengeance.
  • Don’t look at my arms.
  • β€œShow me your arms.”
  • …
  • β€œJERRICK! What is this?! You’re all burnt up!”

Jake gave Jasper a weak smile. They were sitting at a table alone in the cafeteria, the meal of the day on their plates. β€œI’m supposed to meet someone at lunch, but I don’t know who gave it to me and I’m pretty sure someone wants to hurt me.”

β€œSo don’t let them,” Jasper said simply. β€œGive’em what for.”

Jake gave an incredulous look. β€œReally? That’s a good idea. Scare the bully. Then everybody will really hate me.”

β€œNobody hates you.” Jasper picked at his slice of meatloaf. β€œJust some people.”

β€œYou should write a motivational book,” Jake said laughing. β€œβ€˜Not everyone hates you, only some people.’ Really encouraging, Jas.”

Jasper grinned. β€œI’ve always had a way with words.”

  • Rayven whirled around to look up at Jerrick in the window. β€œYou heard that? Did I wake you?”
  • β€œNo. I woke up myself. What are you doing out here? Don’t you know it’s dangerous outside at night?”
  • Rayven turned back around. β€œI know. But I’ve always loved night time. It’s so quiet and peaceful.
  • I wish.
  • β€œDo you love night time?”
  • Β Jerrick said nothing for a moment. β€œI wished I did sometimes. But I fear it was never good for me.”

β—˜ β€œDon’t you know wands are illegal here, Dril?” It was a small town, so everyone knew everyone else.

β—˜ Dril may have had a faint tendril of knowledge that wands were illegal for use. And Wivern had been labeled the town’s kook…

β—˜ β€œBut why would Old Mage Wivern give it to me then?” he protested.

β—˜ Charle chuckled. β€œWivern is old and stuck in his ways. He can’t remember things like that.”

β—˜ Dril found that this offended him. Wivern was his very good friend, and he wouldn’t have Charle insulting him so.

β—˜ β€œI hardly think it fair then. He didn’t know.”

β—˜ β€œBut you did, Drilidric.”

β—˜ Dril stuttered for a response, but found none. He hung his head and handed Charle the wand.

β€œLook,” Charlie said, crossing his arms. β€œIf you think I’m here to beat you up or something, you’re wrong. I really need to talk to you.”

Maybe it was something about Mikayla. Charlie and she were dating and just last week, Jake had told Principal Mars that Mikayla had left a nasty note in his locker. She hadn’t been too happy about that.

β€œAbout what?” Jake said quietly.

β€œI…” Charlie faltered, as if afraid. β€œI need to ask for a favor.”

Jake stared at Charlie. He must’ve misheard. β€œWhat?”

Charlie kicked at the ground. β€œA favor. I need your help.”

β€œMy help?” Jake was incredulous. This strong, stocky football jock needed his help? He found that hard to believe.

β€œYeah…” He looked up, fear in his eyes. β€œYou’re the only one who can help.”

  • β€œThat does not sound like a gift,” Rayven said quietly. β€œIt rather sounds like a curse.”
  • Jerrick looked at Rayven. β€œIt feels like a curse,” he said sighing.
  • β€œBut you did save my life.” She smiled.
  • Jerrick felt elation rise in his chest. But he immediately shoved it back down. This was not meant to be. Rayven would marry Merrick, not him.
  • If Merrick was still alive.
  • β€œMy court will decide if it is a Gift or Katara,” Leonardo said. β€œWe will have a trial in the morning.”
  • Jerrick froze. β€œTrial? Can’t I go free?”
  • Β β€œYou may be out of the dungeons, prince Jerrick,” the king said. β€œBut you are still my prisoner.”

β—˜ Dril reached out and grabbed the chain. It was an interesting key, a very unusual looking one. It was rather flat and much wider at the top. And the teeth were sharp and jagged.

β—˜ β€œI wonder where it goes to,” Dril mused. β€œIt’s not a key I’ve ever seen before.”

β—˜ Zed glanced around to be sure no one was listening. β€œMy father thinks it’s from…the World.”

β—˜ Dril froze, the key dangling from the chain. β€œReally?” he said in fascination. He couldn’t believe it. He’d heard about people traveling to the World through portals, but he had thought them only fables.

β—˜ β€œYes,” Zed said excitedly. β€œI just found it lying on the road on the way here, actually. It was too interesting to pass up.”

β—˜ Dril studied the key again. And he decided he should like to have it.

β—‹ Breathing a sigh of relief, Sydney listened as her captors shuffled into the alley, only to find it empty.

β—‹ The leader yelled angrily, and for a moment, Sydney contemplated giving a cheeky wave down at him. But she thought better of it. It wouldn’t do for them to know she was up here.

β—‹ So instead, she wandered the rooftops of London, feeling like a chimney sweep. So giddy was she that she started dancing to the music in her head.

β—‹ Which in hindsight may not have been the best thing to do, because the men saw her immediately, and acted accordingly.

  4. I’m sure you’ve explained it before, but I’m new to your blog and just out of curiosity, why do you do the bullet points instead of just writing prose? Will you go back and add more to it later?

    1. It’s actually an outline, not real prose. I’m the kind of writer who plans things out in bullet point and then uses that outline to write the actual book. πŸ™‚ I’m a plotter all the way!

      1. Okay, makes sense. It’s just different from other outlines. At least when I make outlines it’s much more summary and less actual story. So you just have the bare-bones plot points/lines of dialogue and then fill it in later?

        1. Yes, I get the bare bones down, and then use that as a guide for the actual story. πŸ™‚

I love hearing from you! ^_^
