A Spot of Christmas Poetry

hollybush

Cookies baking in the oven, sweet smells wafting,

Happy faces waiting eagerly for the delicious treats.

Retro holiday melodies pouring from the radio,

Inciting dreamy waves of nostalgia.

Shiny bulbs dot the tree with sparkling color,

Treasured ornaments dangling from the branches.

Merriness fills our hearts, flooding us with joy and gratitude for

A child in a manger, our Lord and King,

Savior of the world, our first Christmas gift.

Christmastime is here.

The lights all aglow.

When all anger and hate disappear.

Christmastime is here.

When people are full of good cheer.

When Love was born a long time ago.

Christmastime is here.

The lights aglow.

Winter.

Cold. Snowy.

Blowing. Howling. Stunning.

Whimsical. Magical. Grand. Glistening.

Wonderland.

Beautiful paper

Covering a big box that

Holds a perfect gift.

Christmas is filled with candy canes, caramels, cookies,

carefree carolers, hot cocoa,

Christmas trees, covered in crystalline colors,

cranberry sauce, countless crowds,

cold, Christmas cards, candles at night,

candy if you’re caring, coal if you’re cross,

and Christ our King, Creator of kings.

Have a wonderful Christmas everyone! I won’t be posting the week of Christmas, so I’ll see you all in the coming year! ❤

A Much Needed Explanation // NaNoWriMo Week NONE

NaNoWriMo2017

Hey guys! You’re probably wondering what’s wrong with me. I haven’t been updating my word count, I’ve been replying late to your blog posts, and I haven’t posted myself in a good while.

Well, this post is to answer all three of those questions!

As a lot of you know, I was planning on writing a Snow White retelling for the Rooglewood Press contest. It was set in the 1920s and had gangsters and mafia bosses and magic and epic-ness in general. XD

Well, I have to say, I love this story to bits and I would love to finish it someday.

But today is not that day.

I think part of the problem this month was just wasn’t in the right mindset. It seemed like work and family and life and writing was just coming at me in all different directions, and I couldn’t handle it. I couldn’t focus and my mind just wasn’t set on writing this month.

So, I probably won’t be entering my story in the contest, and I won’t be winning NaNo. I am SO GRATEFUL for all of your support and encouragement! ^_^ But I see now that I should’ve just given myself a respite this month, instead of just pushing through. And now I’m suffering the consequences. XD

So there’s my story. But enough gloom. Instead of wallowing in self loathing, I thought I would celebrate all you writers who are ACING IT at NaNo! I’ve seen all of you guys’ ideas and they just all sound so WONDERFUL AND I WANT TO GOBBLE THEM ALL UP. (Get it? Turkey pun? Thanksgiving? Oh, Thanksgiving’s over? …Oh.)

Temporary Schedule Changes // I Need My Sanity, Guys…

1484885598_fwd-arrowsHi guys! I’m so glad to be back from my mini hiatus, back in the blogosphere!

I do have an announcement though. And I hope this doesn’t cause too much of a stir. There are going to be a few (temporary!) changes here on my blog. For the duration of October and till the end of November, I’m only going to be posting every other week, instead of my usual once a week. I’ve been very worried about trying to prep for NaNo and it takes a load off my back not having to worry about getting a post up every week.

I’m working on a shiny new post as we speak and I will be back next week! I hope I haven’t let you all down, I’ve just been feeling really overwhelmed of late. This is only temporary, and I’ll be back to once a week come December. (Wow, it’s almost December already?! O_O)

And now, for your consideration:

Panda being dramatic

An adorable panda gif! 😀

Thank you all for understanding and I hope you’re having a glorious fall! ^_^

Hello guys! Just a quick announcement, I won’t be posting for the rest of September. I’m trying to focus on my writing, and coming up with content for this blog is distracting me from my goal.

But fear not! I will be back in October with posts, snappiness, and general mayhem. And, of course, I will still be reading and commenting on all of your lovely blogs. 🙂

Have a wonderful rest of September, fellow bloggers!

The 2nd Annual Silmarillion Awards // And the Winner is…

silmarillion-awards-border-gold

Welcome, one and all, to the second annual Silmarillion awards ceremony!! I thank you for attending, and I invite you to pull up a chair; relax; maybe even have one of the free cookies provided.

We had quite a turn-out this year! So many of you cast in nominations and seconds, and so many of you voted for your favorites. So, thank you again for all of your participation!

But enough from me. I think it’s time I introduced the man of the hour. Or rather…the hobbit of the hour. Ladies and gentlemen, give a round of applause to our presenter of the Silver Tongue Silmaril…

Bilbo Baggins of the Shire!

the hobbit an unexpected journey

*applause*

Yes, hello, hello, thank you for having me present. You’re all too kind. *smiles* I must say, I was rather shocked when I was asked to present. I’m told this category of the awards is quite new this year, and I feel honored that I would be worthy of presenting.

Well, you are one of the most silver tongued people that I’ve ever met!

You flatter me. But that reminds me…would you mind terribly if I announced the winner in the form of a riddle?

Absolutely not!! That would be wonderful, actually!

Good, good, very well, then, I’ll do it. *clears throat*

I’m shiny like the moon, but only second best. I can be a dollar, but I’m not green. I am gray, but metallic. What am I?

And another…

I can taste, but I don’t taste good. I am often held, but never touched. I can cut like a knife, but I’m not sharp. I am wet, but I don’t rust. What am I?

There, we go. Put them together and we have our winner. How was that?

Wonderful! Can anyone guess the winner?

*silence*

Yes? No? Well, Bilbo, those were fabulous riddles, but I think you might have to spell it out for the audience.

Oh, I suppose so. The winner of the Silver Tongue Silmaril goes to a man brimming with kindness. A man so loving, so caring, he would rather die than have his daughter harmed. With his natural love of words, his charming personality, and his magical voice, I present to you…

Silver Tongue from Inkheart!

Otherwise, known as Mo, which I will hereby call you, I present you with this lovely Silmaril. I couldn’t imagine a better person to have this award. Your name says it all.

silmaril-silvertongue

Oh goodness…Thank you all so much! I can’t believe you would choose little me to be the winner. I’m nearly moved to tears. You’re all wonderful, thank you for your kindness! I will forever treasure this Silmaril!

You surely deserve it, Mo! And thank you Bilbo, for the lovely presentation!!

You’re very welcome, Madeline. I’m glad I came. I never expected to have so much fun. *smiles*

Thank you all for coming to this ceremony! Be sure to check out the other ceremonies going on at the other bloggers sites. A new one is posted everyday weekday until the 28th!

And for those of your curious what the result percentages were…

  • Silver Tongue from Inkheart – 33%
  • Puddleglum from The Chronicles of Narnia – 32% (Dear Puddlglum lost by one vote!)
  • The Florid Sword from The Wingfeather Saga – 13%
  • Eanrin from The Tales of Goldstone Wood – 13%
  • Leonard from The Tales of Goldstone Wodd – 8%

Well, what a great time! I hope you’ve enjoyed Bilbo’s presentation, and yay for Mo! Send your congrats to him down below! Thank you all again for participating! 😀

Silmarillion Awards // Voting Round!

silmarillion-awards-border-gold

Hello guys! And may I just say…WOW! Thank you all SO, SO MUCH for all of your nominations and seconds! It was a blast seeing all of you interact in the comments! 🙂

Also, shout-out to ALEX C. who won the giveaway included in my last post! Be sure to check your email, and congratulations!

Now, on to the voting! The top 5 nominees are…

Eanrin from The Tales of Goldstone Wood – Knight of Farthestshore and bard of King Ibudan, is a faerie of Rudiobus, able to shift between his two true forms, man and cat. He is famous across all realms for his poetic accounts of historical events and his tales of love – jilted and otherwise.

Lionheart from The Tales of Goldstone Wood – Also known as Leonard the Lightning Tongue, has always had a love for riddles and tomfoolery. His greatest wish was to become a court jester, and he did become one, but rather by accident. Him and Eanrin often butt heads with each other.

Puddleglum from The Chronicles of Narnia – Pessimistic might be the kindest descriptor. But in spite of his beliefs that it will start raining, that food that tastes good is bound to turn the stomach later, and his concerns that his companions may start knifing each other…you’ll not find a truer companion or guide. His words of wisdom may be a bit depressing, but that doesn’t make them any less accurate!

Silver Tongue a.k.a. Mo from the Inkheart trilogy – He’s a bookbinder that has the ability to bring fictional characters out of books and into the real world by reading aloud, therefore known to many as Silver Tongue.

The Florid Sword from The Wingfeather Saga – That mysterious swashbuckler, has some pompously magnificent monologue!

Now go vote for your favorites using ~> THIS LINK! Just remember: no voting more than once!

And, surprise, surprise! We’re doing something new this year! It is a scavenger hunt across the blogosphere! Your mission is to piece together the phrase running rampant across the other bloggers posts. Piece together the entire phrase and enter it in the voting form to be entered into a giveaway for this AWESOME grand prize!!

1 Grand Prize To Rule Them All

My snippet of phrase I give to you: Their radiance shone like the distant stars

Follow THIS LINK to find the next piece of the phrase…

Thank you guys for all of your nominations!! I’m so excited for voting round, and may your favorite character win… 😉

The 2nd Annual Silmarillion Awards // Nomination Round! {CLOSED}

silmarillion-awards-border-gold

{THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR NOMINATIONS AND SECONDS! ANY COMMENTS POSTED AFTER THIS WILL NOT COUNT TOWARD THE TOTAL. 🙂 }

Hello friends! Have I got a big surprise for you all! (Well, it’s not really a surprise since you probably read the title of this post…)

We are hosting our 2nd Annual Silmarillion Awards Ceremony!!! 😀

*cue applause, confetti, and general merriment*

I am so excited for this years ceremony! Many of the previous bloggers have returned to share in the festivities, but we also have two new bloggers joining us this year! Welcome Savannah and Kyle!

In case you’re new to this ceremony, here’s a little explanation:

The Silmarillion Awards have been created by DJ Edwardson and Jenelle Schmidt as a way to honor J.R.R. Tolkien as the Father of Modern Fantasy, open up a discussion about some of our other favorite fantasy works, and to have a ton of fun this summer.

When we started thinking about creating a sort of “Fantasy Oscars,” we found it difficult to fathom any award that wouldn’t be won by a character or item from The Lord of the Rings… so, to make things a bit more interesting, we decided to call them “The Silmarillion Awards” and have characters from LOTR and The Hobbit present the awards as examples of the ultimate standard for each award. Hopefully that will even the playing field a bit.

And here’s a gorgeous graphic done by the marvelous Deborah:

SilmAwards2017Infographic

Nominate characters in the comments of each blog post. If someone has already nominated the character you would have nominated, you may either second that nomination, open a new nomination, or do both. We will be picking the 5 characters with the most “seconds” for the final voting period, so you may also “third,” “fourth,” “fifth,” etc any nominations you particularly like.

Here are the other bloggers links:

~

Wisest Councillor – Tracey

Least Competent Henchman – Kyle

Silver Tongue – Me!

Most Epic Hero – Abbey

Strangest Character – Savannah

Most Epic Heroine – Deborah

Most Mischievous Imp – Elise

Most Magnificent Dragon – D.J.

Most Loyal Friend – Zachary

Most Nefarious Villain – Jenelle

~

This year, I will be hosting the Silver Tongue silmaril here on my blog. Here is the criteria I’m looking for in this character:

The winner of the Silver Tongue silmaril should go to a character who held you rapt with their words. Their voice is full of riddles, wit, and a magic all their own. They hold you spellbound with their clever speech, leaving you wanting more. They are blessed with the gift of a silver tongue, and they wield it well.

The award will be presented by an individual who may be small, but his quick wit and clever riddles have helped him out of more than a few sticky situations.

Something new we’re doing this year is a GIVEAWAY! Here’s the link for you to enter your name in the drawing:

http://www.rafflecopter.com/rafl/display/6c7e337d10/?

These are the lovely books you could win! However, the giveaway is only until July 9th, so enter soon!

Elle BurtonSongweaver's Vow

Just a few rules before I leave you to your nominating:

  • The Silmarils are LIFETIME awards, so previous winners cannot win them again. They may win them in a different category than before, but not the same. Since this is a new addition to the original lineup, there are no restrictions here.
  • No nominating LOTR or Hobbit characters. It would be quite awkward for them to have to present for themselves.
  • No nominating characters from your OWN books (if you’ve written any 😉 )!
  • In your nomination comment, if you could say what book the character is from, that would be very helpful to us.
  • And lastly, these are Fantasy awards, so nominations are only open to Fantasy characters. However, there is a bit of gray line running throughout all spec-fiction, so if you have a valid argument as to why your character is, actually, from Fantasy, I’ll allow it!

I think that about sums everything up! I can’t wait to see you go wild in the comments below! XD Just remember to have fun! GO FANTASY! ❤

A Trip Down Memory Lane // A List of My Favorite Old TV Shows

OldTVShows

Hello all! I was recently looking up some of my favorite TV shows from when I was little, and I got extremely nostalgic. (Yeah, I’m only 16, but I can get nostalgic, okay?) So I thought it’d be fun to share some of my childhood with you all. Maybe you remember some of these shows too…

Arthur

This was my all-time favorite show as a kid. I knew most of the episodes by heart and I’d always get excited when the little number would roll onto the screen, meaning it would be a new episode!!

Clifford the Big Red Dog

Another great show. I remember I would always get frustrated with Cleo and Mac, and I remember thinking that Birdwell Island being shaped as a bone was the coolest. thing. ever.

Cyberchase

This show legit taught me math, not even kidding. XD And I remember loving the episode that was a huge Harry Potter rip-off (though I didn’t know that at the time XD ). It was one of those shows that I always watched everyday, without fail. That, and Arthur.

Dragon Tales

I loved this show too much. XD I like to think it inspired my love of dragons and fantasy, but you just really can’t know. I always wanted to be like Emmy and have Casey as my dragon to fly around on in Dragon Land. *sighs* Good times… XD

Fetch! with Ruff Ruffman

This was a half-real, half-cartoon show that I would eagerly wait to come on. I loved it because it was real kids, who got to do really cool stuff. I always wanted to be on the show.

Kim Possible

She was the superhero that I looked up to in my youth. (I…actually still kinda look up to her… XD ). Her sidekick, Ron Stoppable, was hilarious and I loved that he was the confused, scared one who had no idea what to do. I relate to him a lot… XD

Maya & Miguel

My upgrade from Dora the Explorer. XD No, but seriously, this was a great show! I always wanted to be friends with Maya. She just seemed so perky and friendly. I also love now that they included such unique characters. (Andy, anyone?)

PB&J Otter

We’re going waaaaay old school here. I remember this from when I was only a wee little one. Butter was always hilarious to me. And so was Flick Duck. “Cheese and quackers!”

Zoboomafoo

Without fail, I always watched this at lunch time, sitting in the living room with my lunch. My favorite part was when the “Who Could it Be?” song played, and you had to guess which animal would appear at the end. 🙂

Zoom

This was like the show you watched if you were cool. At least, in my opinion. XD As with most of the shows, it was always my dream to be on it, doing cool experiments and being in each of the segments. 😛

Well, that was my childhood in a nutshell. What about you? Do you remember any of these shows? Which ones did I miss? Let me know in the comments down below!

Awards and Tags and Fun, Oh My! // The Sunshine Blogger Award and The Blue Sky Tag

twotags

Hello guys! I was recently nominated by Tracey over at her blog and Elise at E.E. Rawls and I thought all these questions looked like so much fun! Thank you again for nominating me, Tracey and Elise!

The rules are pretty simple:

The Sunshine Blogger Award ~

Answer 11 questions from your nominator, then tag 11 other bloggers, and ask them 11 new questions.

The Blue Sky Tag ~

Thank the person who nominated you and link back to their post. Answer the 11 questions. Tag 11 people. Give your nominees 11 questions to answer.

Let’s get to it!

The Sunshine Blogger Award ~

1. What’s the most addicting app on your phone?

I don’t actually have a phone (unless you count a flip-phone as one 😉 ), but I do have a Nook full of stuff. I would probably have to say the most addicting app right now is CrossStitchWorld. Yeah…I know. Kinda seems like a grandma game, but it’s really fun! I love seeing the picture come together in the end. 🙂

2. What’s a song that speaks to your life right now?

My music moods are different every day, so it’s hard for me to pick just one song. But, if I had to pick just one, it’d be Higher by Unspoken. It’s not only a really cool song, but it also reminds me that I should live my life to glorify the One who gave me this life. Even in the rough times. Especially in the rough times. ❤

3. Do you have a book or movie that’s your “happy place”–a fictional world into which you retreat when you need a breather? What is it?

I love escaping into any fictional world! But my favorite happy place would probably have to be any of the Pixar movies. I grew up loving them and I can remember watching Monsters Inc. in particular over and over again. They always put a smile on my face and I love them all so dearly! ❤

4. What’s a book you were (or are) looking forward to so much you’re scared to read it, for fear it won’t live up to your expectations?

Right now, I’m incredibly nervous to read The Fatal Tree, the last book on the Bright Empires series. I just cannot prepare myself for what’s going to happen, so I’m just going to have to take the plunge… *gulp*

Stephen R. Lawhead - The Fatal Tree / #awordfromJoJo #ChristianFiction:

5. If you had to have all of your past memories wiped except for one day, which day would you choose to remember?

Oh dear, that’s a toughie! Let’s see…I might choose a day out of one of my family vacations, the trip we took to South Dakota in particular. That was a really, really fun trip, and we were all together, having a great time with each other. I would never want to forget how close me and my family are. 🙂

6. What question would you like to ask one of your favorite authors?

These questions keep getting tougher and tougher! 😛 I’ve always wanted to ask Marissa Meyer a question, but I feel like I would just kinda go into fangirl mode and not be able to talk. XD Hmm…I think I’d ask Anne Elisabeth Stengl what helped her in keeping track while writing a series. That’s something I struggle with, and I think Anne does a good job of it.

Heartless by Anne Elisabeth Stengl (Tales of Goldstone Wood book 1):

7. If you had to describe yourself as one of the four seasons, which would it be?

Definitely fall. Or autumn, if you’re British. 😉 There’s just so much to love about it! Apple pie, pumpkin spice, hayrides, colorful leaves, cool, crisp air, the beginning of a new school year… It’s a wonderful time of year! ^_^

8. What’s your personality type? (Myers Briggs, DISC, whichever test you prefer.)

I’m a full on INFJ, according to the Myers Briggs test. Everything I’ve read about INFJs just fit me to a tee. Which is hard sometimes because I feel a bit lonely, being so rare and such… But I don’t mind. Too much, anyway. XD

9. An envelope containing $500 shows up on your doorstep. On what do you spend it?

Well, books, duh. XD

10. Would you rather be trapped in a lamp, a tower, or an enchanted sleep?

Ooh, I think I would pick a lamp! Wouldn’t I be a genie of some sort then? At least in my imprisonment, I would be able to help some poor souls instead of just wallowing miserably in my prison. 😛

11. Which Disney villain(ess) do you find the most scary?

When I was younger, I was absolutely terrified of Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty. The part where she turns into a dragon? We always skipped that part. XD Now that I’m older, I would probably say either Ursula from The Little Mermaid, or Scar from The Lion King.

The Blue Sky Tag ~

1. What is your first reaction when someone knocks on your door?

I usually jerk my head up and stare confusedly at my siblings because…we never have unexpected visitors. XD

2. Whose name makes you smile as soon as you hear it? Care to share why?

Well, any of my family’s names make me happy. And the name of Jesus Christ, of course. 🙂 I love hearing my characters’ names too, when I’m out and about and I overhear someone say one of their names. I love that when it happens. ❤

3. What exotic animal is your favorite?

I’m not sure if this counts as an exotic animal since it’s not technically real, but I’ve always thought phoenixes were super cool. A new bird rising from the ashes of the old, fiery wings, all that neat stuff. Or, you know, a dragon.

4. If you had to go on a trip to the moon, what book series would you take with you? (It can only be one!)

Comment below if I should read this. I'm not that sure if I want to so I need some suggestions.:

Well…I can tell you right now, I would try my hardest to get out of going on a trip to the moon. XD The stars from afar are good for me. But, I suppose if I had to, I would pick The Lunar Chronicles…Though, that may not be the best idea, since scary moon people are a involved…

5. Fairy tales or super heroes?

This is sooo hard! I love them both equally! I couldn’t possibly choose!

6. What’s the best book you’ve read lately?

A Singular and Whimsical Problem: Congrats to the Five Magic Spindles Winners!:

It’s actually the one I’m reading right now, Five Magic Spindles by various authors. I’ve loved all the stories so far and I’m so sad I’m on the last one! I’m going to be putting up a review of it pretty soon. 😉

7. Are you more like a Hobbit, Elf, Dwarf, Goblin, Ent, or Orc?

I’m definitely more like a Hobbit. They live in their cozy Hobbit holes and drink tea and read books. If I had a Hobbit hole, I would probably be labeled a Hobbit. XD

8. Since warm weather is coming, what is your favorite summer activity?

When I was younger I loved swimming a LOT. But after a…traumatic experience that involved a lake and some itchy bugs…well, it made me a little wary. 😛 I love basketball, rollerblading, and swinging most. ❤

9. Name your best childhood memory.

*tries to remember childhood* I’m…kinda drawing a blank here, which is really sad. XD But I do remember we used to have a tire swing in our backyard at our old house. I would love to just sit in there and swing or have Dad push us as high as it could possibly go. Those were fun times. ^_^

10. What were you like as a kid? (good, bad, artsy, funny, etc…?)

Well, I suppose I should be honest…I wasn’t a very good kid. I’m told I was really naughty, and I had a hard time focusing. But I think I was also really creative and curious, which inspired my interests of writing now. I read my favorite books over and over again and I would write down all the good dreams I had in a special notebook. (Really, what’s changed? XD )

11. If you could invent anything, what would it be?

Hmm…A special device that when you connected it to your head, it wrote down exactly what you were thinking? I could go for one of those! XD

Alright, that’s a wrap!

Here are my questions:

  1. What is your oldest memory? How far back do you remember?
  2. If you could have a super power/magic ability, what would you choose?
  3. If someone was going to play you in the movie of your life, who would you want cast?
  4. If you could learn any instrument instantly, which would you choose?
  5. If you were so famous you got mobbed every time you went outside, what would be your go-to disguise?
  6. If you had an animal sidekick, what animal would it be? Could it talk? Fly? Shapeshift?
  7. What book/series would you love to be made into a TV show/movie?
  8. What villain from a book or movie would you most love to see transformed into a good guy?
  9. What’s the theme song of your life?
  10. Iron Man or Captain America? Superman or Batman? Marvel or DC?
  11. What is the most shocking plot twist you’ve ever read in a book? (You don’t have to say what it is, just what book it’s from! 🙂 )

Okay, so I don’t really know who’s received these awards, so if you’ve already done either of them, don’t feel obligated, but my nominations are as follows:

Winter @ Winter’s Falling Fast

Deborah @ The Road of a Writer

Jenelle @ Jenelle Schmidt

Elise @ E.E. Rawls

Savannah @ Scattered Scribblings

Lisa @ Pickle’s Pen and Trinkets

Bernie @ Bernie’s Musings and Doings

Kate Marie @ Story and Dark Chocolate

C.B. @ The World of the Writer

Madi @ The Book Owl and

Faith @ The Writer’s Song

I can’t wait to see who answers these questions! ^_^

That was so much fun! Thanks again to Tracey and Elise! 🙂 What about you? Do you have any addicting apps? What were you like as a kid? Let me know in the comments below!until-next-time-1
