Music Every Writer Should Check Out

Music for Writers

If you didn’t already know this about me, I LOVE music. I play piano and a little violin, and I also listen to all sorts of genres. So, naturally, I would like listening to music when I write. I’ve discovered so many amazing artists because of this, on Pandora and YouTube.

And so, I thought I would share my top favorite artists I listen to while I write. I’ve thrown in a mix of all sorts of musicians, ranging from big names to smaller, but still great, artists. ^_^ Maybe you’ll find a new favorite!

Lindsey Stirling

lindsey stirling | Tumblr

Okay, so no surprise there. I LOVE Lindsey’s music! It’s so fast and upbeat, perfect for action and chase scenes. She’s also branched out into more vocal songs too.

If you’re new to her, listen to: Roundtable Rival, Crystallize, Shadows

Zack Hemsey

I think I could write to this... Zack Hemsey "The Way"

He writes amazing, electronic/classical/orchestral music! He has several albums out and though I haven’t listened to all of his songs, the ones I have I’ve LOVED.

If you’re new to him, listen to: Mind Heist, Redemption, Informing the Target

Hans Zimmer

This is film score composer Hans Zimmer. He is one of the amazing film composers and whenever I listen to his music I am motivated to be brilliant. His music makes me want to write more and master my craft. His excellence is so inspiring. His music also helps me to remember my purpose in life, to just create beautiful work. His work is just that awesome.

A pretty big name, but for obvious reasons. His music pulls at all of your emotions. Every movie I’ve watched that he’s scored I’ve fallen in love with the soundtrack.

If you’re new to him, listen to: Time, He’s a Pirate, Dark Knight Overture

Josh Vietti

Josh Vietti - Pop Violinist. Would love for him to play "lost without you" at my wedding or funeral....makes me tear up every time I hear that song!

He’s a violinist much like Lindsey who writes his own songs. He mixes electric with his violin so amazingly. He also does covers of hip-hop songs too. 🙂

If you’re new to him, listen to: In a Trance, Night in Paris, Toccata

Alan Walker

Alan Walker

A great artist who solely uses electronic instruments to make his music. He used to be a really small artist, but he’s now become a giant in the EDM world.

If you’re new to him, listen to: Spectre, Memories, New Heart

Simply Three

Simply Three

These guys do mostly instrumental covers of songs, but they do them in such creative ways, I hardly realized I’m listening to a lyrical song!

If you’re new to them, listen to: Sweet Dreams, Maverick, Heathens

Jennifer Thomas

Pianist/Composer Jennifer Thomas Photo by Kat Hennessey Ritmuller piano provided by Skelley Pianos, Tacoma, WA Dress by Badgley Mischka #piano #reddress

This is an artist I found while listening on Pandora. She writes her own piano music and occasionally plays the violin. Her music is filled with lots of drama and suspense.

If you’re new to her, listen to: Illumination, Toccata and Fugue, Rainforest

David Garrett

David Garrett He looks like he really loves what he does. Can't wait to see him in January!

Another violinist! I guess I really like violin…XD David is an amazing artist who does covers and also writes his own music. His songs are intense, fast, and furious.

If you’re new to him, listen to: Vivaldi vs. Vertigo, The 5th, Master of Puppets

Two Steps from Hell

Two Steps From Hell. Will love them forever. Tattoo on inside right ankle. Design top tip of flame longer. Try to get flames closer together. Color and design as real flames.

Don’t let their name fool you! Their music is awesome. They do original orchestral works with lots of emotion and action. Their music has helped me through many rough patches while writing.

If you’re new to them, listen to: El Dorado, Hypnotica, SkyWorld

Vitamin String Quartet

Vitamin String Quartet: Any of them...to many to mention, and they are all amazing

This group does covers of popular songs and arranges them for strings. They do everything, from old 70s and 80s songs to wedding music. I love their style.

If you’re new to them, listen to: They have soooo many covers, but to recommend a few; Kryptonite, Chandelier, Merry Go Round of Life

Philip Wesley

Philip Wesley (Solo Piano)

His music is the perfect setting for sad, all-is-lost, moments in you story. He writes soulful, bittersweet ballads that really tug at your heartstrings.

If you’re new to him, listen to: The Approaching Night, Racing Against the Sunset, Tears of the East

ThePianoGuys

Google Image Result for http://img.karaoke-lyrics.net/img/artists/42194/piano-guys-301907.jpg

If you haven’t already heard of these guys (which I’m positive you have), GO LISTEN TO THEM. They mix classical with modern, mix songs, melding them into different genres, and all with the beautiful sound of the cello and piano.

If you’re new to them, listen to: Code Name Vivaldi, CeLLOOPa, Cello Wars

Taylor Davis

Taylor Davis--this is the dress she wears in her titanic violin video.

She does arrangements of TV show, movie, and video game songs, and she does them WELL. She also writes a bit of her own music too.

If you’re new to her, listen to: Avengers theme, Star Wars Medley, Megalovania

Helen Jane Long

Awesome My friends, classical music composer Helen Jane Long.

Not very well-known at all, but still magnificently beautiful, Helen writes thoughtful, quiet music that still conveys a number of emotions.

If you’re new to her, listen to: Expression, Release, Doll

Wow, that was a long list…kudos to you if you made it through. I guess I just love music so much. XD Have you heard of any of these artists? What do you listen to? Let me know down below!

The Many Problems Of A…{Violinist}

The Many Problems Of A...

Hello all! Today, I have a post for all those violinists out there. I only play a little, but in the time that I have, I’ve come to some frustrating conclusions…

4th Finger Is The Bane Of My Existence

Sherlock Frustrated

It’s like it’s only purpose in life is to bring me endless frustration. If I can nail the note, then I can’t reach the next note. MY PINKY CAN’T DEAL WITH THIS.

Squeaky Strings

forever darling lucille ball gif

Whatever the song, there’s always that one part that just can’t be helped. It sounds like a cat is crying out in pain. (Fun fact: whenever I play violin, my cat leaves the room as fast as humanly (cat-ly?) possible.)

When A Note Is Just Barely Off Key, But It’s Still Just A Bit Too Noticeable To Ignore

…I mean, who can nail all the notes, am I right?

PROTECT THE BOW HAIR. AT ALL COSTS.

How many times do I have to tell people NOT to touch the bow hair? IT’S NOT MADE FOR TOUCH. It will get greasy finger oil on it and then make the violin sound even worse when I play it. XD

Rosin. Everywhere.

Chewbacca No

Rosin + black clothes = BIG NO NO. Not to mention it’s one of the stickiest substances on the planet.

Packing Up Your Violin Only To Find You Forgot To Put The Bow In

My shoulders are evidently really boney, because a shoulder rest on my collar bone feels like someone is shoving an oddly shaped rock into my skin. It’s not a pleasant experience, to say the least.

Any violinists out there? Do you struggle with any of these? Are there any problems I missed? Let me know down below!

The Many Problems Of A…{Pianist}

Hello fellow bloggers!

Sorry I haven’t been posting lately, I’ve been working on adding some new pages to my blog, so go check them out! 🙂

Here’s for all the pianists out there! ❤

1. Wearing shoes unfit for pedaling

impatient-photos-13

It’s so annoying when your foot slips and the pedal decides to make this horrible banging sound. And you just like…sorry…

2. When a piece is so long it doesn’t fit on the rack

I know I’ve taped pages to the wall before just to be able to see all of them…

3. Messing up at a performance only because you’re nervous

reaction to disney bought star wars gif

Please no. Why. WHY?

4. When you mess up in the middle of Bach and have no idea where to start

GIF - When you walk into a room and forgot what you were gonna do <--- Seriously.

Um…Let’s just start here in this measure…nope, not happening…how about…here? Oh hang it, I’m starting over.

5. When you’re music book won’t stay open because it’s too thick

PLEASE. JUST. STAY. OPEN. Is that so much to ask? It’s not like I have to deal with page turns too! Oh, wait… XP

6. Hitting a key, but no sound comes out/Sticky keys

friendship is magic my little pony gif

It’s especially bad on old pianos…which I own…UGH.

7. People asking you questions or talking to you while you’re playing…

And you’re just like…

So there are the problems I face as a pianist. Do you feel me? Leave me a comment and tell me your piano pet peeve! ❤

30 (More Like 60) Song Challenge

Hello!

I was tagged by Bernie @ Bernie’s Musings and Doings, and since I love music so, so much, I thought I would give it a go!

(Oh, and I’ll have two songs for each question, one for lyrical music, and one for instrumental.)

  1. Your favorite song

Gah! I can’t possibly choose! There are way too many. I refuse to answer this question.

2. Your least favorite song

Lyrical: Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae) by Silento

I…just…UGH. What is the point of this song, again?

Instrumental: Wanna Get Hype by District 78

I just really…don’t like this song. It’s not music to me.

3. A song that makes you happy

L: Unbelievable by Owl City

I love this song because it’s basically my childhood. Lots of memories… 🙂

I: Spontaneous Me by Lindsey Stirling

I love how bouncy and rhythmic the beat is. It makes me smile. 😀

4. A song that makes you sad

L: Someone Like You by Adele

The way she sings is just so amazing. It makes me kind of sad, yet inspired at the same time.

I: A Song Simply Remixed by Elijah Bossenbroek

The flow of the song is so gripping and emotional to me. But I still love it. ❤

5. A song that reminds you of someone

L: Your Song by Elton John

This song always reminds me of my parents because this was the first song they danced to on their wedding day. ❤

I: Cello Wars by ThePianoGuys

This one makes me think of my brother. He’s a bit of a Star Wars fanatic, and because of this video, he wants to play cello. 🙂

6. A song that reminds you of somewhere

L: Radioactive cover by Pentatonix and Lindsey Stirling

Makes me think of a desolate old city, especially this cover of it. Oh, and this cover + me = ❤ EXTREME LOVE.

I: El Dorado by Two Steps from Hell

Makes me think of a lost city of gold…thus my train of thought ends up thinking of The Road to El Dorado, naturally, hence the name. 😛

7. A song that reminds you of a certain event

L: My Deliverer by Rich Mullins

Puts me right in Egypt along with the Israelites. Such a great, powerful song.

I: Music-Box Dancer cover by Mike Strickland

This always makes me think of ice-skating…Just so light and airy. 😉

8. A song that you know all the words to

Um… all of the songs I listen to?

9. A song you can dance to

L: Good Feeling cover by Lindsey Stirling

This one always makes me want to dance. Plus, the Just Dance format of the video makes me super pumped. 😀

I: Shadows by Lindsey Stirling

Lindsey songs are good for dancing, I guess? 😛 I love bouncing around to this one. 🙂

10. A song that makes you fall asleep

L: Say Something by A Great Big World

This song always makes my eyes droop…

I: Radio Ballet by Eluvium

This is just such a calm, relaxing song to me. I love the simplicity. ❤

11. A song from your favorite band

L: My Lighthouse by Rend Collective

This was the first song I ever heard by RC and now I love their music.

I: I Want You Bach by ThePianoGuys

Don’t know if they count as a band…but I love them so much! 😀

12. A song from a band you hate

L: What Makes You Beautiful by One Direction

Just…bleh. Sorry if you like 1D! 😛

I: Emergency by District 78

I don’t  hate this band, but I don’t necessarily like all of their music…

13. A song that’s a guilty pleasure

L: Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This) by Eurythmics

Super catchy, but…lyrics aren’t the best in the world…

I: I don’t really see instrumental music as a guilty pleasure, I guess. I can’t think of any!

14. A song that no one would expect you to love

L: Most 80s and 70s music, I guess. I just really love that era! 🙂

I: Um…anything other than classical music? XD All my friends think I’m strange for liking it. 😛

15. A song that describes you

L: Me Without You by TobyMac

I just love this song. The lyrics mean so much to me. 🙂

I: River Flows in You by Yiruma

Another song that I absolutely love. My music teacher introduced me to this song and I fell in love. ❤

16. A song you used to love but now hate

L: Let it Go by Disney/Demi Lovato

Okay, you might’ve seen that one coming… 😛

I: I don’t usually (usually) love a song than end up hating it. So I can’t say.

17. A song you hear often on the radio

L: Good Good Father by Chris Tomlin

I hear this constantly on the radio, and I really love it. 🙂

I: I don’t really listen to any stations with instrumental music. :\

18. A song you wish you heard on the radio

L: Anything by Pentatonix. I wish I could find a station where they play, if they even do that. 🙂

I: Anything by Lindsey Stirling. I know she’s played for a radio stations before, so that would be cool. 😉

19. A song from your favorite album

L: I don’t usually like whole albums, but any Matt Maher song I’m basically guaranteed to like. ❤

I: I love all the songs on Philip Wesley’s Dark Night of the Soul album. It’s. so. good.

20. A song you listen to when you’re angry

L: Beat It by Michael Jackson

Yeah, so I really like MJ music…And this is a really angry-sounding song, so I thought it would fit.

I: Imperial March cover by Celldweller

It’s got an almost scary-sounding beat. Definitely angry… O_O

21. A song you listen to when you’re happy

L: Safe and Sound by Capital Cities

I don’t know, why but this song makes me so incredibly happy. I really love the use of the trumpets. The video makes me smile too. 🙂

I: Vivaldi vs. Vertigo by David Garrett

Its always fun watching David because he looks like he’s just having so much fun. 😀 I’ve found I really like crossover songs like this.

22. A song you listen to when you’re sad

L: Titanium by Sia (feat. David Guetta)

It’s a cool song, but it makes me inexplicably sad. 😦

I: Midnight Worker by Chance’s End

Another sad song. For me at least. *shrugs* I tend to think the strangest things are sad. 😛

23. A song you want to play at your wedding

L: A Thousand Years cover by Aimee Proal and Lindsey Stirling

Yeah, yeah, it’s a Twilight song, but I still like it a lot. ❤

I: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Rings – Concerning Hobbits by Vitamin String Quartet

XD I know, I know, maybe not this one…but I would definitely like a nice arrangement of Pachelbel’s Canon. ❤

24. A song you want to play at your funeral

Um…I don’t know?

25. A song that makes you laugh

L: Star Wars Medley cover by Lindsey Stirling and Peter Hollens

Geeky, cheesy, Star Wars fun. What’s not to love? 😀

I: Me and My Cello cover by ThePianoGuys

Again, the video really makes it funny. Love this song. ❤

26. A song that you can play on an instrument

L: Piano Man by Billy Joel

My Dad really loves this song, and it’s pretty fun to play on the piano. A much simpler version, but still. 🙂

I: Spontaneous Me by Lindsey Stirling

I was so proud when I finally learned to play this on piano! I’ve played it a couple times in public for talent shows and fair performances too. I still love it so much. ❤

27. A song you wish you could play

There are so many! I can’t choose just one. 😛

28. A song in a foreign language that you like

L: Rock Me Amadeus by Falco, or La Bamba by Ritchie Valens

I can’t decide which one to choose… 🙂

I: Lord of the Rings Medley cover by Lindsey Stirling

Yes, she does sing in this one. It’s a made-up language, but still… 🙂

29. A song from your childhood

L: I remember loving Raffi songs a lot. The ones I remember most are Mr. Sun, Willoughby Wallaby Woo, and The More We Get Together. They bring back so many memories… ❤

I: I don’t remember listening to instrumental music much when I was younger… But I remember getting really excited when Trans-Siberian Orchestra came on during Christmas time, particularly this song.

30. Your favorite song at this time last year

Um…sorry, but I don’t remember back that far… XD

That’s the challenge! It was a lot of fun finding all of this music. 🙂 Thanks again for tagging me Bernie!

So, have you heard any of these songs? Do we share a similar taste in music? Let me know in the comments! ❤
