A Life Update

Hello guys! You may have been thinking I was dead at this point, but HA I fooled you all!

Anyway, I wanted to give you guys a little update about what’s been going on with me, why I haven’t been posting regularly, etc.

Life

Some of you might know that I’ve been working at the library for almost two years now. While it’s a very nice place to work, it’s not a place I was planning to stay for very long. It’s a part time job and the pay is just above the minimum wage, and I would like to move onto something a bit more permanent (and perhaps with better pay).

I’ve been thinking about this a lot, and I’ve decided to pursue my passion for music. I’ve always wanted to help people using my talents, and so I’ve considered going to school for music therapy. But college is expensive and there are only two schools in the entire state of Minnesota that offer a music therapy degree. And only one of them calls themselves a Christian college. Yeah.

But I didn’t stop there! My parents stumbled upon a school near Branson, Missouri called the College of the Ozarks. They have a Piano Major (which would be AWESOME), but I’ve read they only accept people from the Ozarks region (which I am NOT in).

I’ve also considered just being an independent performer, handing my card out to different businesses and institutions that might want a piano player. I even designed a fun-looking business card!

shhhh i know it’s tiny it’s a business card okay

It’s been an interesting task, trying to find a school or job, and I haven’t made a ton of progress. But it’s in the back of my mind (slowly moving to the front XD).

Writing

I’ve been working hard at editing Imprint and I’mΒ veeeeerrrryΒ close to finishing the thing! AND I’M SO EXCITED. I’ve already got an outline for the second book written up, and I have the third book simmering in the back of my head. IT’S ALL COMING TOGETHER AND I LOVE IT.

Aside from Imprint, I’ve also been working on my superhero trilogy idea and a few other ideas that WON’T LEAVE ME ALONE NO MATTER HOW HARD I TRY TO DETER THEM. *ahem* Anyway…you can look at the progress of those on my books page if you so desire. πŸ˜€

I’ve been thinking a lot about traditional publishing, independent publishing, and self publishing too. I set up an agent appointment for Realm Makers (AND I’M KINDA NERVOUS), but I’ve also seriously been considering self-publishing or independent publishing. I’ve done some research (aka I watched Abbie’s video and looked at like three websites XD) and it’s gotten me thinking about other options.

On the one hand, I think it could be a really great investment if I were to self publish…

…But then on the other hand, I think of all the work and blood and sweat and tears that would happen, and then independent publishing looks pretty good again…

…And then I imagine seeing my book in bookstores across the country…and I look back at traditional publishing. XD

It’s this cycle going on in my head and I’m kind of at war with myself here.

the inside of my brain right now

I would LOVE to hear some of your opinions about this topic! Please tell me about your experiences (if you’ve had any) with traditional, independent, or self publishing! I’d love to hear them!

Realm Makers

I forget if I’ve already announced this but I’M GOING TO REALM MAKERS 2019. (As…I mentioned about about the agent appointment. XD) BUT ANYWAY YAYYY!!

I’m sooooo looking forward to seeing you guys again and meeting some more of you for the first time! I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE YOU ALL. I’m also kind of nervous because I get kind of quiet around people and I’m kind of an anxious awkward bean. BUT I WILL ATTEMPT TO SOCIALIZE. I PROMISE. XD

me trying to make conversation

I’ve been debating who to go as to the banquet…I’m really stuck between these two ideas I really love and IT’S KILLING ME. But I’m not telling you guys beforehand. I want it to be a surprise. *grin*

That’s…really all.

So much is going to be happening in the next few months, and I’ll probably only be posting twice a month (if I can claw my way from life’s clutches that is XD).

If you haven’t heard, I have a movie blog. It’s pretty fun. I talk about movies I liked and didn’t like, and I think my next post is going to be either a Detective Pikachu review or some kind of topical piece. We’ll see.

Thanks for reading! What’s happening in your life? Is it as crazy as mine right now (doubtful)? Let me know down below!

  1. SO VERY GLAD YOU’RE NOT DEAD M’DEAR! ;D But really, I loved getting this little update! It definitely sounds like you’ve had a LOT on your plate! That is awesome you’ve been looking into a new job and/or school. I…I don’t think I even knew you were a musician. :O HOW DID I MISS THIS??? That is so wonderful! And EEP. Your card is gorgeous! I know making these types of decisions is HUGE, not to mention stressful, but I’m so proud of you for taking the leap. I will be praying for you as you take this next step in your life! ❀ God's got awesome plans for you, and I know He'll lead you there. ^_^

That is SOOOOO awesome you've made so much progress with your book. YAAAAY!!!! But ooooh yes, the traditional vs. indie publishing question. SO MANY PROS AND CONS. *flails* One thing to remember is you absolutely can do both. I mean, if you independently publish a book, that does not mean you're locked in as an indie author FOREVER. And vice versa. But I still know it's another one of those HUGE decisions, so more prayers coming your way!

I'M SO THRILLED I'LL BE SEEING YOU AGAIN AT REALM MAKERS!!!! AAAAAAAHHHHH! CAN'T WAIT! πŸ˜€

    1. ISN’T IT LOVELY? πŸ˜‰ Aww, I’m glad you liked it! It’s been…oofda. Kinda crazy around here. XD Yeah, I’ve been giving it a lot of thought, and I really think I should be looking into it! YES I AM. ^___^ I don’t know how…I don’t think I talk about it much on my blog though…XD Aww, THANK YOU! Ugh, yes, they are SO stressful and it’s kind of scary thinking about all of this, but thank you Christine, for your support! I know I just need to let God take the reins and let Him lead me toward whatever life He has for me. Thanks for the reminder. ❀

AGGGH YES I'M SO EXCITED. *flails around* Oooh yes, the conundrum… πŸ˜› I'm just so TORN. *sadness* I just need to remember that both of them are viable options. It's not like I'm stuck doing one thing forever. It's just the deciding which one to try first that gets me…XD Thank you! *hugs*

      EEEEEE YAY I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE YOU TOOOOOOO!!!! πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

  3. Maddie I love having a granddaughter in the arts. You are amazingly talented and creative and it zings my heart to know you are using what you have.

Sister Madonna has self published and liked the advantage of being able to write what she wanted to say. Publishers can edit. She said either way you have to self promote. I would love to read your book and I’d be happy to promote and host you here with a SD audience. Maybe in the HS or I will explore.

    1. Aww, you’re too sweet! Thank you, Grandma! I’m just happy to have decided on a path, for the most part. πŸ™‚

Oh yes, I imagine that would be a pretty good perk of self-publishing. I’ve heard it’s a lot of work, a lot of stuff to keep track of, but it can pay off. Yes, I would definitely need an editor, no matter what I decide to do, haha. Self-promoting would be a pretty big focus, I’m sure. That would be so cool! It would definitely help with getting my name out there. That’s so nice of you! ❀

  4. I’ve always wanted to work at a library.
I’m going to Realm Makers too, I’m really nervous about it. I’m going to try to socialize too, it should be fun.

    1. It’s a really nice job! Really great atmosphere, with the books and all. πŸ˜€
Oooh, that’s awesome! I’m kinda nervous too, but trust me, it’s a lot of fun! I’ll be trying to socialize too, which is always a blast. XD

  5. Okay, but I MIGHT have laughed out loud at that GIF of Squidward… πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ WAIT. WAIT WAIT WAIT. MADELINE. YOU WORK AT A LIBRARY??? That’s AWESOME! (I mean I completely understand wanting to work somewhere with more pay and everything. That makes sense. BUT LIBRARIES!!! πŸ˜‚ I’ve always wanted to work at a library, even if it’s not a forever job.) I really hope you’ll be able to figure out the college/music thing! It sounds like what you’re trying to do could really impact and help people, so I hope you’re able to do it!!! *hugs*

As for publishing, DUDE! I’VE LITERALLY BEEN HAVING THIS SAME STRUGGLE RECENTLY. Buuuut I’ve talked to my mom and she kind of regrounded me in how much I want to be traditionally published. Self-pub is an AMAZING thing, but I just don’t know as if it’s in line with what I want as an Author. I want to see my books in actual bookstores and to be physical beings going out into the great unknown, and while Just know that’s possible with Self-Pub, I still think traditional is going to be what I strive for–at least at first. And I have literally no expertise on the topic, but I DO watch Alexa Donne’s YouTube videos on publishing and the like (she’s a traditionally published author) and they have been super helpful with understanding the industry! You might check out her channel!

ALSO YOUR BUSINESSES CARD IS ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL AND I LOVE IT SO SO MUCH. THAT IS ALL.

    1. It’s a pretty great GIF, I gotta say. XD YES. YES YES YES I DO. (Yeah, I’ve worked there for nearly two years now, and I’ve decided it’s probably time to find a more…lucrative job. XD IT’S SUCH A FUN ENVIRONMENT. I almost always come home with a big stack of books, which…kind of adds to the TBR problem I have, but STILL. I would totally recommend working at a library, at least for a little while! ^_^) I hope I do too! I’ve always wanted to help people through my music, and this seems like the way to go. Thank you!! *hugs back*

UGH IT’S SO FRUSTRATING. Yeah, traditionally published is a great route to take, and it’s kind of what I’ve always leaned toward. That was my main thing too! I’ve always wanted to see my little creations in bookstores, as physical copies that people can hold and love. ^_^ I think that’s a great route to go with! And, as Christine said in her comment, you’re not locked into anything. You can go from being traditionally published to self-published and vice versa. Ooh, I will definitely check her out! I’m trying to get all the information I can on each different path of publishing, so I will be looking at her videos! Thanks for recommending her! ❀

AGGHHH THANK YOU, YOU ARE SO SWEET. I had soooo much fun designing it! <333

      1. XD It’s the BEST GIF. πŸ˜‚ (OKAY BUT I WOULD TOTALLY BE THE SAME WAY IF I WORKED AT A LIBRARY. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ I’d take home ALLLL of the books. AND NO ONE COULD STOP ME!!! Mwahahahahahaha!!! πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚)

Right? Seeing our little children take over the world and wreak havoc is what every author wants. Though that’s definitely possible with both options…. Ooh, I didn’t see Christine’s comment! That’s really good advice…
And you’re welcome!!! I will warn you that a few of her vids have some language issues (it’s mild, but still) but overall her advice seems relatively sound when it comes to trad publishing…

  6. Ooh I had some friends who went to the College of the Ozarks, and they lived no where near the Ozarks. That was a few years ago, but there’s some chance anyway. Good luck!

  7. You are a musician?!?!??! HOW did I not know this? I LOVE YOUR BUSINESS CARD! So… do you sing or play an instrument? What genre of music is your favorite? I must know all the things!

Also, you’re in Minnesota? Did I know that? I feel like I must have known that, or forgotten, or something… *waves from Wisconsin* HI NEIGHBOR!!!!!!

I WISH I WERE GOING TO REALM MAKERS AGAIN *sobs* oh, I’m gonna miss seeing everyone again… and in a slightly less awkward “we’ve never actually met” sort of way. Sigh. Maybe next year. Though everyone appears to be going THIS year, so who knows?

I love self publishing. It’s a lot of work, but I enjoy it. I like going at my own pace. Also, I like having all the control (insert power-hungry villain gif here along with a super evil-sounding “MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!”) ahem. Well, also, I hate writing query letters and pitching and all that. But with my current WIP I miiiiiight be looking for an agent/traditional publisher so… we shall see what happens with that! πŸ™‚

Loved hearing all about all the things in your life right now! Praying you find a better paying job and for direction on college decisions and author career paths and all that!

    1. AGGGH THANK YOU JENELLE!!! YES, I am a musician!! I play piano! (And a little bit of violin, but…not really hard core. XD) I basically love ALLLLLL the music! I love playing classical, contemporary, hymns, and oldies!! Especially songs from the 80s! πŸ˜€

YES. I think I may have mentioned it a very few times… Hello, fellow Midwesterner!! *waves*

AWWW I WISH YOU WERE TOO!!! *sadness* I will miss seeing you!! Well, I at least hope to go as many times as I can, so maybe we’ll see each other again someday! ^_^

I’ve heard it’s a really good experience!! Yeah, I imagine it’s a TON of work, but well worth it! And having all that control has gotta be nice. πŸ˜€ OOOOH, YAY FOR YOU!! That would be so awesome if you went the traditional route for this project of yours!! I’ll be rooting for you!! <333

Aww, glad you enjoyed!! Thanks so much for your prayers, I really appreciate it! I'll be praying for you and your family too! And I hope you've been enjoying your June!! <333
